According to beliefs, there is a difference of opinion between Shani Dev and his father Surya Dev. But on this day, Shani Dev forgets mutual differences and establishes good relations with his father, that is why this day is known as Makar Sankranti.

Bhishma Pitamah, lying on the bed of arrows, also sacrificed his body on this day. After suffering for a long time, Bhishma Pitamah attained heaven by sacrificing his body on this day itself. According to beliefs, the good days of the year start from the day of Makar Sankranti. On this day we should donate more and more to the poor.
